Transitioning from Driving Routes to Planning Routes
Bakers Waste Services Ltd thoroughly believe in career progression and an unlimited amount of opportunities no matter what role you’re in. Michael Harvey, Operations Route Coordinator, showed the determination and hard-work needed to display just this.
Previously working for Bakers Waste as a HGV driver, Michael is now planning the routes he once used to drive.
Perks of being a Bakers Driver
After speaking with Michael, he made it clear that driving for Bakers has more comfortable, consistent working hours in comparison to many driving jobs. The working hours at Bakers Waste may vary but generally are between 6 am and 4 pm. Michael said, “I knew I would always see the best part of the afternoon and could spend it with my family”.
Michael drove Skip and RORO trucks as well as articulated vehicles for Bakers Waste over 1 year and 10 months.

Period of Transition
When asked how he found going from the cab to the office environment, Michael mentioned multiple occasions in which he used his driving experience to help in his new role. For example, Michael already has a great knowledge of routes, access to sites and more.
Therefore, Michael has the ability to advise drivers on how to go about a particular job. Michael said “learning the systems was difficult to begin with, but you quickly pick it up”. Michael was seeking a new challenge and his new role offers just that.
Operations Route Coordinator
Michael’s new role consists of everyday customer contact on the phone and email, planning routes for the trucks he once drove, managing customer data via the Bakers Waste systems and much more.
Having tried the role for a number of weeks to see if it suited both him and the business, Michael has become an integral member of the Operations Team in which his individual experience has proved invaluable.
