Crack Down on Plastic with new Plastic Tax?
It is no secret that there’s an ever-growing problem with plastic and in particular with plastic waste. Everyday packaging like disposable coffee cups, takeaway boxes and polystyrene packaging are thrown away without a thought. It is packaging like this that’s causing the problem.
The government has warned the knock-on effect of this could be a plastic tax, similar to that of the 5p levy on plastic bags. It is our responsibility to look at ways to limit the amount of single-use plastic packaging as Chancellor of the Exchequer states “We must take bold action to become a world leader in tackling the scourge of single-use plastic littering our streets, countryside and coastline.”
What can you do to make a difference?
Want to make a difference? Things to avoid or cut-out if possible are plastic straws and coffee cups, however, there are some things you can’t live without or are incredibly difficult to work around when nearly all your food is prepared in plastic packaging.
You can look out for symbols like the one below which we found on the bottom of a Selfridges bag.
Ideally, making sure all of the plastic you use is recycled will make a huge difference. Bakers Waste have a dedicated plastic recycling collection in both Leicester and Northampton. Click here to read about our plastic recycling.
