Diesel is out? Electric is in?
The ban will bring a complete end to sales of all new petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. This ban is all-encompassing and also includes the sale of any combustion-powered vehicle from 2030 onwards. Under current plans, the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned from 2030. With some hybrid cars given a stay of execution until 2035. So far in 2021, electric trucks and cars have accounted for 7.2% of sales – up from 4% across the same period in 2020.
This ban on diesel and petrol vehicles will encourage more people to invest in electric vehicles. Electric cars in Europe emit, on average, almost three times less CO2 than an equivalent petrol or diesel cars. That’s according to a new online tool developed by T&E that allows the public to compare the lifecycle emissions of an EV to fossil-fueled vehicles.

Electric Trucks are the future.
“The energy efficiency calculation is about comparing the efficiency map of the diesel and losses in the transmission chain with the efficiency of the electric drivetrain and energy recuperation while braking,” said Edward Jobson, vice president of electromobility at Volvo Trucks.
He gave an example of a city refuse truck, which can have a low average speed of about 12.5 mph and an average load of about 15% of its maximum.
“The average efficiency of a diesel at this very low-load case is about 20%,” he noted. “The electric drivetrain will have about 80% efficiency at a low-load case. Together with some brake energy recuperation and more efficient auxiliary drives, this will lead to about five times higher efficiency for the electric drive.” (Fleet Owner)

Truck Driver Shortage
It’s important to note the current UK driver shortage. Once this shortage has been resolved, we will have lots more trucks on the roads and its time these trucks were electric.
Why is there a shortage of HGV drivers? The UK needs 100,000 more HGV drivers if it is to meet demand, according to the Road Haulage Association (RHA). Rod McKenzie, told Sky News it is a “critical situation” and is also a “cocktail of chaos” had led to the crisis. The Road Haulage Association estimates that up to 20,000 HGV drivers from the EU left during the Brexit process.
